The average death per day due to road accidents is about 474 lives. 44 percent of these record fatalities were two wheeler riders without helmets. Per the 2022 data, fatalities in road accidents claimed 1.68 lakh lives. Injuries due to road accidents were 4 percent lesser in 2022. The aforementioned data for 2022 is from the central government’s road transport ministry. However, the data per National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) stands at 1.71 lakh fatalities for 2022. Both these agencies have not furnished data for 2023. Per Times of India, UP registered the highest number of fatalities by road crashes in 2023 at 23,652 victims. Tamil Nadu followed with 18,347 victims. Maharashtra (15,366), Madhya Pradesh (13,798), and Karnataka (12,321) also trailed behind. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu at 72,292 topped the chart of injuries in road accidents, followed by Madhya Pradesh (55,769) and Kerala (54,320).
Meanwhile, the internet blamed a host of reasons for the growing fatalities on the Indian road. Corrupt RTOs, stray animals, potholes, the absolute menace of two wheeler drivers, careless heavy vehicle drivers, wrong side driving, drunk driving, driving without the helmet, and also ‘Ethanol Baba ki Meherbani,’ were a handful of the issues netizens raised.

A few netizens suggested how to get the grim statistics off the road by putting greater emphasis on driver education, ensuring stricter standards of examination, and while leaving higher penalties for breaking rules. “RTO has to be completely overhauled,” emphasized one user.

Meanwhile, several netizens argued that the unofficial numbers of fatalities and injuries in road accidents could be way higher than reported.
These are just official numbers. I believe the real numbers will be easily around 2.5 lakhs per year., which is around 685 lives every day.
