CEO and Chief Scientist at ZOHO, Sridhar Vembu, in his recent tweet shared a somber insight on the ongoing AI-led layoffs and the disruption at large on the horizon. He wrote
The fact that software engineers get paid better than mechanical engineers or civil engineers or chemists or school teachers is not some birthright and we cannot take that for granted, and we cannot assume it will last forever.
Emphasizing how the economy doesn’t revolve around the grandioseness of brands, Vembu further added,
The fact that customers pay for our products also cannot be taken for granted.

AI could be the obituary for several technologies and services spawned by them. Vembu in his assessment remarks
This is to remind ourselves that we can be “disrupted” – and the more we assume we won’t be, the more likely we will be.”
The Zoho chief further highlighted a statement by Andy Grove of Intel
“Only the paranoid survive.”
Summating his tweet, Vembu quipped
The productivity revolution I see coming to software development (LLMs + tooling) could destroy a lot of software jobs. This is sobering but necessary to internalize.”

The Zoho chief’s sentiment is in sync with a growing concern among intellectuals, global leaders, and the lay that humanity must be prepared for the great AI disruption across all domains. FAANG companies, now called MAANG (Meta, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google), have all laid off employees in droves as these tech giants integrate AI agents to their work.
A wake up call and a reminder to stay on gaurd and keep abreast with the latest while holding onto the legacy. You never know what works.
