Fog at Indira Gandhi International Airport delays over 110 flights

Dense fog-induced low visibility conditions led to the delay of over 110 flights from the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) located here on Friday.

According to airport sources, poor visibility conditions and non-CATIIIB ILS trained pilots led to the delays. However, no diversions or cancellations were reported during the low visibility procedure period.

Under the LVP period, RVR (runway visual range) for landings under CATIIIB ILS are allowed even if visibility is at 50 meters and take-off at 125 meters.

As per data on flightradar24.com, the time period of average arrival and departure delay rose due to the cascading effect.

At around 12.30 pm, the average arrival delay was around 13 minutes, while it was 45 minutes for departures.

The airport , on average, caters to 95 flight movements per hour or around 1,200 per day. Besides, airport sources told businessline that delays were mainly due to operational and safety reasons.

Earlier in the day, Delhi International Airport which maintains and operates IGIA said in a tweet on X (formerly Twitter) that landings and take offs continue at Delhi Airport, flights that are not CAT Ill compliant may get affected.

“Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information,” DIAL had said.

In a follow-up tweet around 11.00 a.m., DIAL said that low visibility procedures are still in progress at Delhi Airport.

“However, there has been no impact on flight operations. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.”
