McAfee And Intel Team Up To Unleash AI Tool To Combat Deepfakes; Here’s How It Works

McAfee, a renowned name in online security, has unveiled significant enhancements to its AI-driven deepfake detection technology at the RSA San Francisco conference. This innovation harnesses the power of the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) found in Intel Core Ultra processor-based PCs.

The upgraded AI technology, known as McAfee Deepfake Detector (formerly ‘Project Mockingbird’), was introduced earlier this year amid escalating concerns among consumers regarding deepfake scams and misinformation. A recent survey revealed that 80% of Indians are now more worried about deepfakes than they were a year ago. Today’s announcement reaffirms McAfee’s dedication to providing cutting-edge online protection solutions, empowering users to navigate the digital world with confidence.

The collaboration between McAfee and Intel aims to address a pressing consumer and societal need by assisting individuals in distinguishing between truth and falsehood. With 64% of Indians stating that AI has made it more difficult to detect online scams, cybercriminals increasingly use AI to manipulate audio in videos, creating convincing deepfake scams.

McAfee Deepfake Detector employs advanced AI detection techniques, including transformer-based Deep Neural Network models meticulously trained to identify and alert users when video audio is likely AI-generated or manipulated. At RSA, McAfee is showcasing the substantial performance and privacy enhancements achieved through the utilization of Intel’s AI PC technology.

By leveraging the NPU in Intel Core Ultra processors, McAfee’s AI models can conduct inference (the analysis and detection of deepfakes) locally, eliminating the need to transmit sensitive user data to the cloud. McAfee has observed up to a 300% performance improvement on the same model by leveraging the NPU. This enhanced performance, combined with the privacy benefits of local model execution and improved battery life, offers significant advantages to consumers.

McAfee Deepfake Detector utilizes advanced AI detection models to identify AI-generated audio in videos, enabling users to assess the authenticity of digital content. Initially available for English language detection, plans are underway to introduce support for other languages in subsequent phases.
