Tata Sons formalises trust to support Air India crash victims

The Air India accident resulted in the death of 260 persons including passengers, crew and persons on ground.

Tata Sons has registered a welfare trust to support the victims of the June 12 Air India Boeing 787 accident with a ₹500 crore commitment.  

The trust, called AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust, will provide support to the dependents/kin of the deceased and also to those injured and all others who are directly or collaterally affected by the accident, Tata Sons said. This will include ex-gratia payment of ₹1 crore for the victims, medical treatment for those seriously injured and support for the rebuilding of B J Medical college hostel infrastructure which was damaged in the accident. 

The accident resulted in the death of 260 persons including passengers, crew and persons on ground.

The trust will also provide aid and assistance to alleviate trauma or distress suffered by first responders, relief workers and government staff who provided support following the accident.

Tata Sons and Tata Trust together have pledged to contribute ₹250 crore each for the trust’s philanthropic objects. The trust will be managed and administered by a five member board of trustees. These include former Tata group veteran S Padmanabhan and Tata Sons group counsel Sidharth Sharma. Additional trustees will be appointed shortly, Tata Sons said.
