India’s homegrown Unified Payments Interface (UPI) registered 18.40 billion transactions amounting to ₹24.04-lakh crore in June, according to National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data. The transaction volume grew 32 per cent on a yearly basis, while value of UPI transactions was up 20 per cent in June. On average, UPI ecosystem recorded 613 million transaction daily in June, while the average daily UPI transaction value was ₹80,131 crore.

In May, a total of 18.68 billion UPI transactions amounting to ₹25.14-lakh crore was recorded by NPCI. According to Deepak Chand Thakur, CEO & co-founder of NPST, while recent data show slight moderation in growth, it reflects that UPI is reaching a critical scale rather than a slowdown in adoption.

“The next phase of expansion will be driven by innovative use cases such as embedded credit, B2B payments, IoT-enabled transactions, and broadening reach across global and rural markets. As UPI continues to evolve into a robust, full-fledged payments ecosystem, stakeholders should leverage this opportunity to modernize their switching infrastructure and operational processes to effectively support the growing diversity of use cases and future demands,” he said.

Ramakrishnan Ramamurthy, Chief Delivery and Operations Officer – India, Worldline, said the monthly fall in UPI transaction can largely be linked to seasonality effect. “Q1 for financial services is a moderate period for growth, it tends to pick up in Q2. On a yearly basis, UPI volume and value growth continues to be very robust,” he said. ENDS
