This was revealed at the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting, convened by the Member of Parliament from Dakshina Kannada, Capt Brijesh Chowta, in Mangaluru on Tuesday.

Giving details of the survey, a representative from the Mysuru Division of South Western Railway said a final location survey (FLS) for doubling railway line between Hassan and Mangaluru is being done now.

The tender for conducting FLS work between Mangaluru and Hassan was awarded on April 18, 2025. Collection of existing data from Mysuru division of South Western Railway is done and preliminary desktop survey is in progress.

Scope of the work involves conducting final location survey, preparation and submission of DPR, including environmental impact assessment and social impact assessment. The target date for submission of DPR to Railway Board is April 2026, the representative said.

The proposed 247-km-long double line covers 120 km of plain section between Hassan and Sakleshpura, and Subramanya Road and Mangaluru Junction stations; and 127 km of ghat section between Sakleshpura and Subramanya Road stations.

Ruling gradient in ghat section is proposed as 1 in 100 as against existing 1 in 50 with maximum permissible speed as 100 km per hour as against existing 30 km per hour.

Konkan Railways, South Western Railway and Southern Railway have their railway network in Dakshina Kannada district.
